The Power of Compost

Many gardeners utilize man made fertilizers since they're cheap and easily accessible. They sure do work, too! Unfortunately, the effects are only temporary and of course, one must continue purchasing these fertilizers annually. Blooming Prairie Nursery has a better solution for poor soil quality. COMPOST!

Decayed organic matter(compost), works wonders for soil building. Spreading compost onto ANY ground will, without a doubt, bring about noticeable changes to the area. Vegetation will green and buds and blooms will increase as the soil receives the nutrients from the broken down grass clippings, leaves, and other yard waste from which our composts is derived.

Last week we were invited to enhance 6,000 square feet of flower beds and a large fruit/vegetable garden with compost.  While it was a challenging area as some of the spring bloomers had already popped, and we didn't want to hurt them, it was well worth the time and effort!
Flower beds before compost was added
The same area after we applied a half inch of compost
Fruit/vegetable garden with compost(later tilled)
Compost is essential for great food production as the annuals we eat have high nutrient demands. Applying an inch or two onto vegetable gardens will increase yields and decrease moisture loss.

If one doesn't prefer leaving vital organic matter like leaves and grass clippings on gardens and laying around yards but does desire the lush effects of compost's nutrients, then a thin application of compost could be useful.

Blooming Prairie would like to encourage folks to take a stab at using organic matter as fertilizer as it's 100% non-toxic. Our USDA certified organic compost can provide 50-100% of your lawn and garden's annual nutrient needs in just one application. No area is too large or too small for compost. Start taking steps towards great soil quality!

Bare Root Benefits

Since March, Blooming Prairie team members have been working long days digging in cold dirt, freezing rains, and battling strong winds. so that the bare root stock can be harvested. Digging up roots in these conditions is tough, very dirty work, but someone's gotta do it!

Here's why...

The bare root plant is the most cost effective and hardy plant a nursery can offer, since it's grown in ground(it's natural environment) and produces VERY LITTLE PRODUCT WASTE for consumers.

Consider this very typical senario:

Jane goes and purchases 10 gallon sized, potted plants in April when the weather breaks. She's got spring fever and wants to PLANT! She ends up spending $120 for some non-native potted plants that have been grown indoors. After she puts them in the ground, Jane has 10 new plastic containers that she never uses but saves "just in case." The spring rains continue, and three of the plants don't make it. Later that summer, the 90 degree temperatures burn up the rest of Jane's plants because the root systems weren't deep enough to reach water, and/or the plant didn't respond to the heat by going dormant.

The bare root costs half or less than what a mature, two year old potted plant in a gallon cost. It was germanated outdoors, replanted into production rows, and then dug the following spring(or the next depending on the plant), so it's very accustomed to Iowa's weather patterns. This type of plant has never been placed into a confined space, so its roots are WELL DEVELOPED(large), healthy and ready to quickly acclimate to new soil conditions. Not to mention, when one purchases bare roots instead of potted plants, they end up with a plant and nothing more than maybe a small bag and peat moss in which it was stored. Not extra pots, plastic or packaging involved!

We love bare roots!

Prairie Maintenace: The Annual BURN

There are many things one can do for his/her prairie as far as maintenace goes, especially if the prairie is young. Removing invasive and undesired species(WEEDING!), occasional reseeding of patches, more weeding, mowing and annual controlled burns are all great ways to maintenance a prairie.

I know two very dedicated, skilled and experienced people who spend much of their time out on Blooming Prairie's three year old prairie. On April 7th, 2013, they marched out onto the golden acres and performed an annual burn, not on all of the prairie though...The other living things need a place to stay, too!

A prairie burn begins by assessing the weather, the space and considering habitat. If an area is to be burned, it can happen in the spring or in the fall, but never should the entire prairie be burned at once as one would destroy precious cover for the living critters. Then, after acquiring water, fire and having enough fuel(the dried plant vegetation), the buffer zones are mowed. The buffer zone is an area where the fuel is removed or reduced, so that in case of an unexpected change in the wind or any other element, the fire won't continue to burn other non-burn designated areas. The buffer zones extend around the entire burn area and cut the zone into manageable plots as well.

30 foot wide buffer zone in the middle of the prairie to divide the prairie into sections.

Fire is then set, and the crew carefully observes the burn. Despite what a person might believe, prairie burns don't roar with smoke and flame; they simple crackle and pop their way across an area(pictures of this live to come).
The fire burns right up to the cut area but not any further.
A view of the partially burned prairie above and down below, a section of the untouched bit.

Controlled burns are one of the best management practices since they remove dead vegetation allowing for new regrowth and destroy non-native species and their seeds that aren't deep rooted or fire tolerant like our native varieties.

Blooming Prairie Nursery carries full burn coverage for this type of prairie maintenace application and our crew is highly experienced. Contact us for more information about this type of maintenance for large or small areas.
